4 out of 5 stars Solid device, software needs some serious work   July 13, 2010

The device performs as advertised. I am amazed at how well the hardware works. I took mine on a cross country road trip and returned by plane. It didn't miss a beat. I have the entire trip logged.

I own a Macintosh and I knew up front the vendor software would not work. There are third-party applications that sort of work. GPS Babel has a tendency to time-out before the data is downloaded. I loaded the vendor software on a Windows 7 machine and it's only marginally useful. It crashes a lot and the text can be at times challenging to interpret (poor translation into English).

Qstarz would have a killer app if they would simply address the software issues.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect little GPS - works perfect with my Mac.   May 15, 2010
Mac (Wisconsin)
I bought this to geo tag images for Aperture. It picks up satellites even in a building. I also have used it with MacENC chart plotter. It connected immediately with Bluetooth (cancel the bluetooth network setup screen - you don't need it).

I use gpsbabel (free) to transfer the data to my desktop like this (command line version):
./gpsbabel -t -w -i mtk,erase -f /dev/cu.QstarzGPS-SPPslave -o gpx -F ~/Desktop/out.gpx

To read from GPS (connected via Bluetooth) at terminal use:
screen /dev/tty.QstarzGPS-SPPslave
To end use CTRL-A CTRL-\

I didn't even bother with the included software. The only reason you need it is to change some parameters like the update frequency. I did try the BT747 software mentioned elsewhere although it's been improved so you don't need to do all that complicated stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Good hardware, awful software   May 3, 2010

I've used the device for a couple of weeks now and for the most part it's pretty accurate. From the hardware point of view, it does what it's supposed to do and I have no complaints. The point-of-interest button is an interesting feature letting you tag a location when you are there that will show up in the track data later.

The biggest downside to this device is the software - the quality is well below par. The driver doesn't make the device recogniable to anything other than the QTravel software. The QTravel software is poorly designed and has noticable bugs. To begin with it wasn't able to auto detect the device when connected to a Windows 7 machine, I had to go into device manager, find the port and then manually specify it in the software to find it. The track editing functionality is bizarre with a strange split screen showing the map on the left and the editable track on the right against a white background, why not render the map under the area you have to modify? When switching units between metric and imperial, not all parts of the software respect the settings, with a mix of both units being displayed in different places. When exporting track data as GPX, the software is not including the XML schema information which other software expects when importing it. The good thing about the fact that it exports as XML is that it's easy to fix, just add the following attributes...

[...].

This product has the potential to be really good. The hardware works well and the software has a good list of features and is useable but just painfully annoying. I've been considering returning this if I can find something with equal hardware capability but with a better driver that at least doesn't lock you into using QTravel.

4 out of 5 stars Good tracking GPS   April 30, 2010
David Boldt (Reston, VA USA)
The compact size, number of points stored and frugal battery usage are features in its favor. The software is slightly odd and kludgy, but not difficult to use. In spite of Internet postings saying that it was possible to do so, I was never able to get it working on a Mac. The on/off/mode switch is a little too easily moved and will sometimes be inadvertently jostled from one position to another. All things considered, it's a good Geotagging unit, and would be an excellent companion on any vacation.

3 out of 5 stars Deceptive description   April 18, 2010

The 5Hz "update" rate is deceptive on the BT-q1000x. It did not even cross my mind that a GPS device that could take a reading every 5th of a second wouldn't be able to do the simple task of writing that data to the log at the same rate. I would have paid the extra $50 had I known the eX was the one that actually logged at 5Hz. This was the main reason for the purchase as I use the unit for skydiving tracks that last only 10-60secs. There also is not manual that I have found which describes the features of the Travel recorder v3 software when used in professional mode.
