First Trip - First Problem September 2, 2010 Grandpa Jimbo (Hibbing, Mn) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received my Garmin 1450 as a gift while visiting in a different state. I used it on my return trip home and as I crossed the time line between Eastern Standard Time and Central Standard Time the unit suddenly shut off. I could not get it to turn on and tried holding down the power button for up to 30 seconds as recommended, but to no avail. I stopped at store on the way and the young man plugged it into the USB Port of a computer and WHALA the unit came to life. I believe this model is subject to sudden shutdowns that has not been addressed by Garmin. I have downloaded the latest softwear and am anxious to see if this problem is fixed. Other than that, I find the unit a lot of fun. It is like having a friend with a map who knows how to read it. I especially like how it puts me in the correct lane ahead of time when turning in city traffic.
Unstable unit September 2, 2010 Yonduck Sung (Austin, TX, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This model is unstable. Mine was turned off more than a dozen times in a three months of ownership. Reason is unknown. When contacted the Garmin tech support, they kept saying do a soft reset and/or do firmware upgrade. I did the upgrade twice but the symptom has not been fixed although it got somewhat better just for a while after the update. After about one or two weeks, however, the unit's power became unstable again and the power turned off unexpectedly. Besides, due to small internal storage size, you MUST delete some voice files from the unit to install a new firmware. With unstable power and unhelpful technical support, I would not recommend this model to anyone.
this is a pain August 30, 2010 Carol Swettman (Pleasant Plains, IL United States) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I installed this thing right out of the box and after using it for 2 days, determined the maps in this NEW unit were 2 to 3 years old. Of course Garmin gives you a free update which you are now forced to install. I connected the unit to the internet and Garmin said the update could take several hours. It took over 4 hours! Partially into this update, I determined I had a very high upload rate. Why? Garmin asked me to take down all security and was going through my computer and taking what it wanted. It became obvious that the free update was not something they were doing for me, but was something they were DOING TO ME. If you have any security concerns (passwords, etc.), do not let these people into your computer. My internet provider has me on measured service and this so called FREE UPDATE used 1/5 of my allowed bandwidth for the month. I would never do any business with Garmin again. If we allow companies like this to get away with this, then it will only get worse.
Great if it works August 26, 2010 Len Purchased this unit and it worked fine for two days. Called Amazon and they quickly replaced it. The second unit did not work at all. Purchased one from a local store and it is working fine. Amazon service did a great job, but the units that I received did not function. The unit is a great unit. It is my second Garmin GPS, they are the best. Do not understand the problem with the units from Amazon.
Lost Without It August 23, 2010 Mchick 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I generally don't like those electronic gadgets that take a lot to figure out how to use and frequently don't give the results you are looking for. Wife and I needed to make a long trip for a family gathering some distance away from home and don't like having to look at a map every few miles or so while driving. Thought the Garmin 1450 would make a good travel companion and all I can say about it is that it made the trip so much safer and enjoyable. It got us there and back home without any problems what so ever. It was very easy to use and didn't take a rocket scientist to operate. It gave plenty of advanced notice when having to take exits along the freeway and when to turn. I believe it was an exceptional value and I won't be traveling anywhere without it.
