1700 Maps July 30, 2010 Roy Moren I see some people complain about the map not being up to date. I wonder if they did the free map update or even knew about it. This upgrade will give you the latest map.
Once you buy the unit you have 30 days to go to the Magellan website and get a FREE map upgrade. All you need to do is the online registration and then call them. The service person will give you the newest map upgrade for free. This must be done within 30 days.
I'm not sure if this includes internet purchases or not, as I bought mine locally when it was on sale for the internet price.
Great product, Great features. Map updates too expensive. Needs to be brought up to date July 30, 2010 Lazer (Miami Beach, Florida) After reading other reviews, I was somewhat apprehensive, but I was very glad after I bought it.
The screen in very large, and being above 50 years old I really appreciated it. Positioning the unit is critical, because if you don't find a sweet spot, you can dangerously block your view of the road and other traffic. After some experimenting, I was able to position it low and to the center of my windshield near the dashboard, which worked best for me. The screen is VERY easy to read without straining, and I enjoy being able to see the big picture all displayed in front of me.
One minor point is that sometimes road names for next turn, etc, appear in a data box on the screen, and the box is not full. (ie: The font could have easily have been bigger and still fit in the same box, but it wasn't bigger.) This may be a consequence of using the same software for various models and not always tweeking it fully for this big screen.
The menu and features generally are the same as my smaller Magellan GPS, and the backups to the micro SD card seem to be the same format, so after I have entered new waypoints onto whichever unit I am using - I restore to the other unit from a backup and keep the both units in sync. I just recently decided to backup to the micro SD card on my blackberry cellphone, and now I have an immediate backup with me when I travel should I need an emergency replacement unit or if my GPS gets lost or stolen.
The one feature that is most upsetting is that many of the newer Magellan units and those of their competitors now include free map upgrades - often for the life of the unit, and this one still sticks it to you momentarily when the map needs to be upgraded. NOT ONLY THAT, but the maps that came with the unit were already dated, and even the first update will set you back quite a few dollars. Over time the price of updates can come to EXCEED the price of this GPS!! (Maybe that's how they charge such a reasonable price up front?)
Is this unit being upgraded or discontinued? Costco says they are discontinuing this model and it is almost impossible to find on their shelves. Best Buy in my area only had inventory in a couple of the many stores in the Miami area.
It may be hard to believe, but mine got misplaced (on disadvantage of not using a built in GPS), and I am not sure if I should run out and buy a replacement immediately OR wait for the next greatest 7 inch unit from Magellan.
Even though I have a built in GPS in my 2008 Volvo, I found this unit to be superior. In any case a map upgrade for my built in doesn't cost much less than a new 1700, with it's brighter, larger display and better features. Also several times I have brought my car into the shop for non-GPS related features, and the car has been returned back to me with all of my waypoints erased!! Can't happen here if you make backups - a feature I haven't seen in my factory GPS.
WORKS GREAT PLUS FREE MAP UPDATE July 22, 2010 etp (FLORIDA) I was surprised it came with the free spring 2010 map update so all is good so far. Noticed several more attractions at Disney on the new update. very nice unit.

I gust received a Magellan Roadmate 1700 as a gift. The map is not current. 13708 159th Pl SE in Renton, WA 98059 is not in it. NAVTEQ has the street in their database. The Magellan web site will not accept questions on "CONTACT" screen. Think twice about any Magellan product.
needs some extra features July 20, 2010 tara 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i have to remember how much i paid for this product so i realize i'm going to not get as much as i would if i were to pay a little more. we bought a seven inch screen. VERY NICE! the touch screen works nice. my hubby has large fingers and has no problems with accidently hitting the wrong key. my brother in law has a gps truck mount and it tells him the speed limit as you approach it. this particular model does not have those features. it has one voice, which isn't horrible, but it is kind of fun to change it up. it's not as user friendly as i thought it would be. i was hoping it would just walk me thorugh putting in way points and what not. not so easy. i will have to read up on how to do that. it is a good basic model though.
