Love it July 19, 2010 Mom G (San Francisco, CA) I love it. Easy to use. Stores easily, with GPS still attached, in compartment under arm rest. Just plug it in and go! Better than the ugly weighted pillow or the window mount (illegal in California) which I have used when travelling.
Great doodad - works as advertised July 8, 2010 ookyam moochya I bought this because i found the adhesive on the window mount that came with my GPS starting to wear out, and didn't care for the bean-bag style dash mounts. Been using this for several months now, and it works great and as advertised. The attached power cable plugs right into the back of my Garmin nuvi 255W. Be careful if you have a manual tranny with respect to the placement of your lighter/power socket as it may interfere with shifting. It doesn't work in my Outback because of that and I use a vent mount on that car. There is no problem with the GPS unit working in a lower position then the typical window or dash mount. I have not had any trouble with the unit working itself loose in the power socket, and it remains securely in positiion during driving. I recommend buying an additional bracket mount so that you can easily remove the GPS from the bracket and not have to ever mess with removing the bracket from the ball mount.
Great concept. Not enough power July 4, 2010 KenA1957 This is a decent product in concept but didn't generate enough mAmp for my GPS, even though my unit (Garmin 855) was listed as compatible. The unit only pushes out 500mAmp of power and my GPS needs 800 so while it would technically power it the screeen was very dark and unreadable in the daytime. Also, I thought the firsat unit was defective so I got a replacement prior to asking for a refund. The second unit was not as "solid" as the first, and bumps and vibration caused the unit to move back in the vehicle's power outlet, causing the unit to lose power.
Also, after my first purchase I contacted Arkon and got prompt and helpful response. However, when I got the replacement and then sent it back for a refund, Arkon never answered my email inquiry about other catalog options to meet my need. I was going to buy another item from them. Oh well....their loss.
ARKON GN097-USB Pedestal Lighter Mount July 2, 2010 Umpire.20 (Colorado) The product works as claimed. It removes your Garmin GPS from your window or dashboard and makes it so that people don't even know there is a GPS in the vehicle. It is self powered via a mini USB plug rather than the powered mount that is standard with a Garmin.
The lighter mount comes with the "ball" end of the ball & socket joint. You still have to use the "socket" portion of your original mount but not its power plug. This is why I rate this as a 4 star rather than a 5 star. I have some concerns about removing and replacing the mini USB plug every time you dis-mount the GPS.
My opinion is -----> they should offer the "conventional" power cord on this unit to plug into the the standard mounting bracket socket. At least then you would NOT have to unplug the unit each time you remove the GPS or the lighter mount from the vehicle.
Not compatible with several Nuvi models June 14, 2010 John Lemut 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"NOT compatible with Garmin Nuvi 205, 205W, 255, 255W, 260W, 265, 265W" -from the Arkon website.
Someone should update the Amazon description because it doesn't say anywhere that this thing is incompatible with any Nuvi models.
